JOURNALS

Through my research i came across a website called 'British Journal of Photography' where i found something called 'Photojournalism' http://www.bjp-online.com/category/photography/photojournalism

This website contained many journals of topics in photography as well as collages of photographs which seemed to tell stories (possibly Visual Journals?) Which made me consider doing a Visual Essay by including just images to tell a story. I considered taking images myself and editing them to show different feelings and emotions or surroundings and cultures. I found a website http://vimeo.com/channels/visualessay where i found many visual essays that told different stories from different people and backgrounds.

Brett Doron is a photographer who's creates visual essays which i researched. Heres an example of one with the title 'When Signs Get Real' http://www.brettdorron.com/visual-essays/when-signs-get-real/

On photography.com i came across a list of articles on photography which included fashion, documentary, black and white, fine art and glamour. This gave me a few ideas of things i could include in my essay (visual or journalistic) Fashion and Glamour

CHOSEN TOPIC

After the research i done on all 5 topics, i've decided to pick 'Photography in the Digital age' as my topic. As i have chosen Photography as a new module, i have gained more knowledge on the topic and feel as if i am more capable to talk about this topic rather than the other 4.

Photography has now become a career where people are hired to take pictures at events such as Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations and many more. Photographs are a part of many households as they are framed and hung up all around. As well as this, photographs can be used to tell a story, for example Celebrities lives are only seen by fans in photographs and telivision. Photo's can be collaged and made into timelines of some ones life for example a baby album to show some one when they have grown up.

During research i found a youtube video of a man who took a picture of him self for 6 years which is a type of personal collage and shows a story throughout..

Photographs are used to re-live moments such as holidays, first dates, school day's and all other memories that dont ever want to be forgotten. These images are usually printed and stuck some where or even used as a wallpaper as a mobile phone background or desktop wallpaper.

Celebrities are seen though photographs taken by the paparazzi to show us things that they have been doing or images taken by professional fashion photographers to capture different images and show a different side to them. A photograph can capture different moments depending on the way it is taken, which is what the Digital Age has created. These images tell a story about these lives because the audience does not ever get to see these people in real life, so they are fed information from images to feel a certain way.

Through researching about my chosen topic, i found another website http://www.photography.com/articles/history/ansel-adams/ where i found many articles based on photography. One of which i found very interesting about Ansel Adams. 'Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was a groundbreaking photographer credited with devising the ‘zone system’ technique (a method of concentrating light on negatives to control the look of finished pictures) and the ‘theory of visualization’ (the act of measuring a scene’s light to imagine a finished photo). He is most famously known for his black and white photo series of the Yosemite Valley in California'
http://www.photography.com/articles/history/ansel-adams/

As well as this, photographs are used in magazine covers, posters, films, leaflets and all over the internet. PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE DIGITAL AGE IS GROWING! (and taking over everything). For this reason, i think i will be able to create my essay based on everything i have researched.

NEW DIARY FORMS

A diary is defined as;  a record (originally in handwritten format) with discrete entries arranged by date reporting on what has happened over the course of a day or other period. People used to keep diaries on a daily basis, by writing in a little book, some times with a lock on it just for privacy! (Even i did it).

However, now days..people like to write about their lives on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter or blog sites. Mark Zukerburg, the founder of Facebook has become a billionaire from this one social networking site. Statistics showed that 'As of February 2012, Facebook has more than 845 million active users' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook
Further statistics showed that the website is growing almost 4% each couple of months which is a large signifier that more and more people are signing up to this social networking site and is becoming more popular each day. It also shows that people like to communicate with others via the internet, one of the reasons being that they can hide their identity which becomes a large problem and has been since Facebook was created.

Another type of 'diary form' is Twitter, where people are able to post pictures, follow people (such as celebrities) and post statuses. Twitter does not allow people to add as much information as Facebook but is still increasingly popular especially for celebrities who set up pages for fans to 'follow'

THE TELEPHONE IN MODERN LIFE

The telephone has become part of peoples everday lives, almost every household will have one or even more than one and almost every individual has a mobile phone. In modern society, a telephone or mobile phone is an essential for peoples daily routines, phone calls to make, texts to send, emails to forward and so much more

Through research i found  'Top 10 reasons cell phones have become essential for modern living' http://www.helium.com/items/1871405-top-10-reasons-cell-phones-have-become-essential-for-modern-living  and the first was the fact that it is wireless which means people dont have to stay in one place to have a conversation with some one, especially if it is a private or businesss matter. Mobile phones are not the only phones with wireless connections, household phones are aswell. Another reason was for emergencies which is an obvious need for a wireless phone/ mobile phone, which gives an incentive for elderly people to carry one around. However, the main reason in modern life (21st century) for having a mobile phone is either for business purposes or for entertainment, which is where 'Smart phones' come in to play. '157.8 million smartphones sold worldwide in Q4 2011, bringing the total for the year to 491.4 million units.' 'So year-on-year smartphone sales rose 58%.' http://www.email-marketing-reports.com/wireless-mobile/smartphone-statistics.htm This clearly shows that the need for phones in modern living is increasing yearly.

When the telephone was first created, people were lucky to have one in their household let alone have one in their pocket or handbag..But now, all people have to decide between is a Blackberry or an Iphone.

CINEMA IN THE 21'ST CENTURY

The first ever film clip was of a train entering a train station 'Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat' by the Lumiere Brothers in 1895 which was roumerd to have scared and shoked the audience to the point where they were screaming because they claimed that 'the train was coming at them' - Imagine that?!

Now in the 21'st Century..Cinema has changed drastically, from IMAX to HD to 3D, Animation and so much more

Houndreds of films are made and released in a year which are increasingly becoming 3D (and Animated!) The whole Cinema experience is improving now 3D T.V has been introduced so people can view 3D movies at home..

Comparing Cinema from when it was first introduced to now in the 21'st century,  there are many changes and improvements which have been made. Starting from Sound, to Colour, to HD, to Animation, CGI Technology and 3D movies..

(The actual trailer in 3D- feel free to get out your 3D glasses!)

As i have been researching, i came across the 'best movies of 21'st century' on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/list/YrX4lyz12w4/
Each film can be added to a 'watchlist' so that readers can shortlist films that they want to watch for future reference, nifty ey? As well as this, i came across an Article about independant cinemas in the 21'st century which talks about the changes in Cinema from the early 1960's to now..http://www.aestheticamagazine.com/gfx/26independant%20cinemas.pdf

'The cinema was the hub of the community, a lifeline to news from the wider world and the venue for a regular weekly treat. Before the days of television, cinema was a reliable, affordable source of entertainment and information, and as a result of technological advances, a cinematic presence in our lives has reduced considerably.' -Quote taken from http://www.aestheticamagazine.com/gfx/26independant%20cinemas.pdf

Is is basically talking about how in the past, families and friends would gather and go to the cinema to enjoy the experience because that was the only way they could, whereas now people are able to get that experience in their own home. With the ever evolving technology, 3D and HD TV is allowing people to watch Cinematic films at home.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE DIGITAL AGE

Photography has changed drastically from the 1826 when the first ever photography was taken by Joseph Niepce and then followed by Louis Daguerre who created the Daguerrotype. Followed by that, a Brazzilan painter, Hercules Florence, created a similar process and named it 'Photographie' and many more inventors after that changed the name to what we now know as PHOTOGRAPHY.

The first ever photograph took 8 hours, and then decreased to 30 minutes..and now in the 21st century takes less than one second. Photographs from the early 1830's were formed by using large pieces of equipment whereas now, a photograph can be taken by a mobile phone with a camera.

The modern age (also reffered to as the Information age) is an idea that the current age will be able to pass on information and have accesss to instant information which was not possible in the past. One of the main ways people gain access to instant information is via the INTERNET which is constantly growing and taking over many other forms of media. Therefore photography in the digital age is drastically different from photography when it first was created in the 1800's and photographic information is now instantly created as well as passed on and etc..

During my research of photography in the past/present i came across a sort of timeline on 'http://inventors.about.com/od/pstartinventions/a/Photography.htm' which has listed information about photography dating back from B.C to the 1990's which shows how much information has actually been found and how photography has evolved over decades.

Modernism is a modern thought, character or practice which came from changes to Western Society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Modernism rejects all forms of 'tradition' and is very abstract and unconventional. This plays a large part in any form of art as well as Photography which i could discuss in my essay..
