A diary is defined as; a record (originally in handwritten format) with discrete entries arranged by date reporting on what has happened over the course of a day or other period. People used to keep diaries on a daily basis, by writing in a little book, some times with a lock on it just for privacy! (Even i did it).

However, now days..people like to write about their lives on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter or blog sites. Mark Zukerburg, the founder of Facebook has become a billionaire from this one social networking site. Statistics showed that 'As of February 2012, Facebook has more than 845 million active users' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook
Further statistics showed that the website is growing almost 4% each couple of months which is a large signifier that more and more people are signing up to this social networking site and is becoming more popular each day. It also shows that people like to communicate with others via the internet, one of the reasons being that they can hide their identity which becomes a large problem and has been since Facebook was created.

Another type of 'diary form' is Twitter, where people are able to post pictures, follow people (such as celebrities) and post statuses. Twitter does not allow people to add as much information as Facebook but is still increasingly popular especially for celebrities who set up pages for fans to 'follow'
